Data Collection
Post-Vasectomy data is collected by the practice as a part of a comprehensive, continuous quality improvement. Three methods of data collection are incorporated into his practice:
- An anonymous survey two weeks after the procedure – to provide feedback on the overall experience (pain, satisfaction etc)
- Results of the post-vasectomy sample (whether it has worked or not)
- Contact with the doctor after the procedure. Each significant contact and outcome is logged.

Audit Results
Dr. Dick Beatty regularly conducts medical audits of his vasectomy procedures, systematically reviewing patient outcomes and complications.
While complications after vasectomy are uncommon, no procedure is entirely risk-free. Auditing helps identify:
How often complications occur.
Types of complications, such as infection or haematoma.
Risk factors influencing these complications, including poorly-controlled diabetes.
The results below reflect Dr. Beatty’s own audit data. However, caution is needed when comparing these rates directly with other doctors, as patient populations and reporting methods can vary significantly.
Failure
Approximately one-third of men do not do the post-vasectomy test, so deriving the failure rate from the total number of vasectomies would ‘look good’ but be misleading.
Therefore, the rate of failure (recanalization) should be calculated from the results of the post-vasectomy tests, and not from the total number of vasectomies.
1 failure in 800 for the past 5,000 test results. Continue contraception until getting the all-clear from the post-vasectomy test.
Infection
The rate of prescribing oral antibiotics is approximately 1 in 300 vasectomies. However, inflammation occurring a few days after the procedure is usually temporary.
Infection requiring intravenous antibiotics: fewer than 1 in 1,000 cases.
Abscess requiring surgical treatment: fewer than 1 in 2,000 cases.
Haematoma
Haematoma (bleeding) occurs in around 1 in 500 cases.
Severe Haematoma is < 1 in 1,000 cases.
Pain
Pain experienced in the first two weeks is documented in the post-vasectomy survey above.
Post-Vasectomy Pain Syndrome is a broad term describing ongoing discomfort lasting beyond 3 months, affecting approximately 1 in 100 patients.
After 12 months, this rate decreases to about 1 in 300 patients. Overall, approximately 1 in 1,000 men require an operation for persistent discomfort.
